Dr. Dolittle

Is this the Doctor Dolittle you know?

Chances are it is. But Dr. Dolittle is the main character in a series of fifteen books published between 1920 and 1952. He is able to speak animal languages and goes on various adventures with his animal companions. The book has a history of different approaches to dealing with elements from the original texts that are racist or colonialist.

Other than the name and language skills, Lofting’s original stories in the film above do not have much in common.

More recently, Robert Downey Jr. has donned Dr. Dolittle’s top hat in a rendition that captures a bit more of the original book’s adventure feeling.

The Original Doctor

The character of Dr. John Dolittle first appeared in letters that the author Hugh Lofting illustrated and sent to his children from the trenches of World War I. Dolittle is a physician who feels uncomfortable with humans and prefers his animal companions whose language he learns to speak.

Read chapters: 1-2; 6, 10-12

The next book in the series, The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle published in 1922 won the second Newberry Award Medal ever given out. In this book, nearly five times as long, a young boy meets the Doctor and goes on an adventure looking for a missing naturalist, Long Arrow, an example of the noble savage stereotype.

The Dolittle stories were out of print for a while but were reissued in 1988, changing the illustrations that you saw in the above and removing some language.

Another edited and newly illustrated version was recently released.

I never knew Dr do little was a story. I only knew about the movie.

I never heard of Dr. Dolittle, but the premise seems very interesting. I would honestly be down to watch it. After reading the original story, however, I can definitely see how the use of language described black men as barbaric and the illustrations were offensive. I’m glad that the newer versions have attempted to fix this.

To begin with, I was unaware that Doctor Dolittle was originally a book before it was adapted into a movie. I used to believe that the movie was entirely fictional. I must say that the movie version is quite different from the original book. In the movie, they added some cool new characters and locations to make it more exciting. They also focused more on making us laugh and wowing us with special effects. But even though the movie is different from the book, the main idea of a doctor who talks to animals is still there.

I haven’t watched either of these movies, but I’ve seen them online and heard of them. I never knew it was based on a series, that makes me want to learn more about the stories and watch the movies to see the connections.

I was convinced Dr. Dolittle was only a movie where the protagonist was Eddie Murphy. I remember watching that movie what feels like years ago. Then I saw there was a new version of the movie released in 2020 with the actor Robert Downey Jr, but never really got to watch it. When I was a little child, these types of movies used to be my top pick. I used to let my mind drift thinking how fun it would be if we could communicate with animals. The things we would do. Very interesting learning the movie stems from a story!
