The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up

Peter Pan comes from the later part of the Golden Age of Children’s Literature. Like Lewis Carrol’s Alice in Wonderland the eventual literary tale emerged from stories told to children in the author’s life.

All Children, Except one grow up... quote by J.M. Barrie

The Scottish writer J.M. Barrie created the character of Peter Pan and the story of Peter and Wendy Darling. Though the character first appeared in chapters from The Little White Bird (1902) and was subsequently published as “Peter Pan in Kensington Garden”(1906), it was in Barrie’s 1904 play Peter Pan, Or the Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up, that the character and story fully took place.

The play premiered in London and was such a big hit that a year later, it also opened in New York. This was quickly followed by many films, musicals, and adaptations of the play.

Barrie continually tinkered with the play’s text, the character of Peter, and the overall story over the years, subsequently publishing the novel version of Peter and Wendy, now generally known as Peter Pan, in 1911.

The script of the play was eventually published in 1928.

Black and white cover drawing of Peter with a sword standing on a rock, with a pirate ship behind on the sea, below, Hook sits on the ground, and an Indian with headdress smokes a pipe

In this module, we will be looking at the original Barrie text of the play and novel and will explore various interpretations of this story and character and consider how this story, like Alice in Wonderland, became a staple of children’s literature and popular culture.

I was introduced to Peter Pan when I was maybe 8-10 years of age. I remember watching the Disney movie, I can’t remember if I ever read the book. I remember Peter Pan was an orphan and didn’t have parents, he could never grow old, that he could fly. He lived in Neverland where there were fairies and a bad pirate named Captain Hook. I remember he had a good friend who was a fairy called Tinkerbell and from what I remember she was in love him Peter.

Where have you encountered Peter Pan before? What do you remember of the story?

I can’t remember when I first encounter peter Pan but I do remember seeing the Disney’s film. From watching the film I remember Pater and his fairy friend tinker bell who took the children to the neverland, which was a place of imagination, and then there were captain hook who wanted to get back at pater.

I had encountered Peter Pan in my early years. I was reminded of the fairy named Tinker Bell after watching the Disney film. I also referred to Peter Pan as a young child who never grows up during the entire film. That’s all I really remember. I wasn’t a fan of the movie growing up.

I’ve encountered Peter Pan through the classic animated Disney film, “Peter Pan.” The story of Peter Pan revolves around a young boy who never grows up and his adventures in Neverland. Along with his friends, the Lost Boys, and the fairy Tinker Bell, Peter Pan battles the villainous Captain Hook and his band of pirates. I remember one of the most iconic elements of the story is Peter’s ability to fly, by sprinkling himself with fairy dust.

I was introduced to Peter Pan when I was 6 or 7 years old. I remember they would read it at story time in school. we would all seat in a circle and the teacher would make the story so much fun. Using different pitches and face and hand gestures so that we could imagine how the story was playing. I dont remember very well the actual plot of the story, but I remember where he lived and how he had so much fun with the other children. I remember thinkerbell and Wendy, as well as the pirate villain. I Think i also watched the movie when i was around 12 years old. would love to learn about it again!

I knew of the Disney Peter Pan movie when I was in elementary school but never watched the movie in full. I knew the Tinker Bell movies and that she was originally in the Peter Pan stories as a side character. I also knew Jake and the Never Land Pirates, a Disney Junior original show, which was sort of a spinoff of Peter Pan. The main villain was Captain Hook and Peter Pan would make some appearances as well.

What I remember from the Disney Peter Pan: Wendy and her brothers are taken away to Neverland by Peter Pan using Tinkerbell’s pixie dust which helps them fly. In Neverland are the Lost Boys who dress as animals and act wild. Captain Hook is the villain who they need to fight. Wendy and her brothers get taken back home and it maybe show her grown up? That part I may be remembering wrong but she stays in the real world.

I have encountered at Disney land, and also from the movie. I actually met peter pan when i went to Disney.

What do you remember of the story?
I remember of the Tinkerbell going into the Childrens room and visiting them at night. I remember that where peter pan lived was an island or place very far away from where the children resided. And peter pan and Tinkerbell got into trouble.

Where have you encountered Peter Pan before? What do you remember of the story?

I have only ever watched the Disney version of Peter Pan. From what I remember, Peter Pan, a man wearing green and can fly because of pixie dust (something fairies make), comes to Wendy’s window. He convinces her and her siblings to come with him to Neverland, where nobody ages. I remember something about the villain being a pirate, but not much of the storyline other than that. At the end, Wendy and her siblings go back home.

I have only encountered Peter Pan through the Disney movie version. I remember Peter Pan as a boy who never grew up and gathered boys and girls by taking them to Neverland. Neverland was a magical place with all types of characters and children of all ages go and never have to grow up. I also remember Captain Hook who tried to take Peter Pan down along with other pirates. This was one of my favorite movies growing up.

I first encountered Peter Pan when I was younger, specifically at school scouring through the bookshelf for something new to read. I remember a lot of the story, such as Neverland and its Lost boys, other iconic characters such asCaptain Hook, Tinkerbell, and Wendy. I also seem to recall that Wendy had a younger sibling and that she was on this great big adventure away from home that she loved, but eventually longed to return back home to her bed and family. I also remember wanting to learn how to fly so badly and want to travel to Neverland for myself. The book is pretty nostalgic for me

I have encountered Peter Pan during middle school when I watched the movie. It was not my type of movie. I remember that he used to pick up little children and bring them to an island where they did not grow old. Peter pan also did not grow old.

When I was between 6 and 8 years old, I was introduced to Peter Pan. Although I remember watching the Disney movie, I can’t recalling reading the book. I do remember that Peter Pan was an orphan who could never age, but he could fly. Also, he lived in a place called Neverland, where fairies existed, and an evil pirate named Captain Hook was also his enemy. Peter had a close friend who was a fairy named Tinkerbell, and I think she had feelings for him. My memories of Peter Pan were rekindled after watching the Disney movie, but I was never much of a fan of the film.

I used to enjoy watching the Peter Pan and Tinkerbell movies with my mom because she’s always enjoyed them. I have fond memories of watching them with her. I only remember the Disney version, I’m not familiar with the original story.

I encountered Peter Pan in the Disney films with Tinkerbell. What I remember of the story is Peter Pan meeting Wendy and her brothers, taking them to Neverland one night where they meet the other lost boys and Captain Hook. Peter Pan tries convincing them to stay in Neverland but Wendy and her brothers end up coming back home.
