The “Island of the Blue Dolphin” might have been considered a classic because of the themes in the story. The main character perseveres through hardship. Her father and brother have been killed, leaving her not only alone on the island but without family off of the island. She never stopped trying to get off the island no matter how many years passed. Failing countless times, she continues to build canoe after canoe in an attempt to escape. The story also has themes of compassion. Karana befriends the animals on the island, even the dog that killed her brother. She befriends a woman from the tribe that killed her father. She spares the lives of these beings and builds connections with them, temporarily subsiding her loneliness. It could also show how she copes with loss, fear, and loneliness.

This is a story that has me interested in reading, I feel like it really has you questioning her character on how you can befriend this animal and person who took your loved ones away, but loneliness has a funny way of taking over you and making your mind forget all the bad to create connections to survive mentally. Thanks for sharing!!
Hey Cheyenne!! This is a great presentation. I can definitely see why this story is a classic; just hearing a summary of the plot really captivated me. I am so surprised that she managed to live for so long, but I’m glad that she was eventually rescued. The excerpt you chose really captivated her emotions, namely her loneliness. Day after day, watching the sea, hoping for a ship to come by, only to be met with nothing. It is truly devastating. You did great reading it, too! Your voice was calm and slightly slow, allowing us to take in that empty, lonely feeling. Once again, great job!
Hey Cheyenne! Your presentation was captivating. It’s intriguing to hear your thoughts on the complexities of the protagonist’s character and the themes of loneliness and survival in the story.
Hey Cheyenne, I have read this story before in middle school for a summer reading. I don’t remember the story fully but after watching your presentation it brought back memories of the text. I enjoyed listening to your detailed description of the text.
Hi Cheyenne, your book sounds really cool. I was totally into the part you read, especially since I’m a big fan of the ocean/sea, islands, and sunshine. It reminded me of this one time when I went canoeing. I gotta say, you nailed the reading too! Your voice was super calm and slow. Fantastic job, seriously!
Hey Cheyenne. I thought your presentation was great and easy to follow along. You did a really nice job of bringing the story to life
The plot has drawn me in to the interests i have in adventure books. I think that the challenges faced are relatable in the real world in many ways making this book hold lots of realism to it.
